Mary Magdalene

"But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb.  And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.  Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus.  Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher)."
John 20:11-16

Mary Magdalene has always fascinated me so I decided to do a study on her.  I used the book "All the Women of the Bible" by Herbert Lockyer, "The Bible Dictionary", and the Bible.  Below is some interesting facts about this devoted follower of Jesus.

Magdala is most likely where Mary was from (hence the name Magdalene, just like Jesus is the Nazarene or from Nazareth).  Situated on the west coast of the Sea of Galilee, Magdala was a flourishing town due to the rich dyes sold there and many textile factories.  Mary may have been well-to-do which would've been why she so easily "provided for Him from their substance" Luke 8:3.

In Luke chapter 8 we learn that Jesus cast out 7 demons who were living in Mary.  After that, she left all to follow her new Lord, Savior, and Master and to serve Him in any way she was able.  It is said that whomever is forgiven much, loves much.  Mary demonstrated this unending, devoted love of one who knows how much she's been forgiven!  Several times Mary Magdalene is mentioned first in the lists of women who followed Jesus and provided for Him and His disciples.  She NEVER tried to take the lead but rather led where God had placed her...with her fellow believing sisters.  She was happy being able to serve Jesus in whatever capacity she could, whether or not she was seen and recognized by men.

She and some other women stood at the foot of Jesus' cross, watched Him give up His spirit, saw where He was buried and prepared spices to wrap His body in after the Sabbath.  Mary was at the tomb early Sunday morning and she was the first one to see Jesus after His resurrection...what a privilege!  She was the first Jesus commanded to share the good news with His disciples!

What can we learn from this amazing lady?  If you truly desire to serve the Lord He will provide for you a place "on the wall" so to speak.  Mary excelled in service to others, including her Lord, and Jesus blessed her by allowing her to see Him first after His resurrection.  What a woman all of us girls could be taught from and learn to emulate!

May you be blessed this Resurrection Sunday as we celebrate the life of our Lord and His glorious resurrection!  May we too be excited that our Lord is alive, just like Mary Magdalene!

Learning to delight in Jesus,
Hannah
